it's here!

By God, they did it. They actually did it. I ... I ... Wow.

I don't know how they managed to keep it a secret for so long. Sure, there have been rumors, mostly having to do with the Slovak National Corpus and there's been talk of CD/DVD-ROMs. But as I walked into the bookstore of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) this afternoon, I could not believe what I saw. There it was, fresh off the presses, seeing the inside of a bookstore for the first time - the long-awaited first comprehensive dictionary of the Slovak language ever and the first real dictionary of the Slovak language since 1959.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the first glimpse of Slovník súčasného slovenského jazyka (Dictionary of Current Slovak).

Now I've been giving the good folks over at the SAV Ľudovít Štúr Institute of Linguistics hard time over the lack of a decent current grammar and/or dictionary. Today, I'm taking it back. And that's all the taking I'm doing today. You see, I got to the bookstore at four in the afternoon, by which time they only had two copies of the Dictionary left, both of them already reserved and paid for. But first thing Monday, I'm getting my own copy and once I have examined it, I shall be certain to share my thoughts with you. I'm sure that there many questions on your mind. Does it include etymology? Which side of the prescriptivist-descriptivist divide will it fall on? Are we perhaps witnessing the birth of a new era in Slovak linguistics and maybe even language policy? Dammit, I can't wait for it to be Monday!

Does it include etymology?

I'm definitely looking forward to the answer to this (and, assuming it's positive, an opinion on how good the etymologies are).

*drools a bit*

As am I. I mean, I knew my brother moved to Bratislava for a reason other than all his silly personal ones.

That's exciting. And it's so cool to see someone so excited about a dictionary.

Although I am surprised that it's the first Slovak dictionary to be made in nearly 50 years. When I think how suckful it is that the endangered languages I work on are so poorly resourced it's actually a bit reassuring to think that that can happen to a National language too.

Go Slovakia!

re etymology - no, it does not include etymology. An etymology dictionary is in work and could perhaps be ready by this or the following year

re first Slovak dictionary to be made in nearly 50 years - that is not true, there were revised editions of KSSJ (Short dictionary of Slovak language) published every few years. This is however the first so called big dictionary published since Peciar's one, and that probably made some people think there were no dictionaries in between.

anonymous,
I figured as much :o)

rg,
just to clarify: I wrote "first real dictionary". I am fully - or, rather, painfully - aware of the existence of KKSJ.
